Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Participation

The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project team is committed to fair and equal opportunities for firms of all sizes to do business on this important bi-state project. The bi-state management team, comprised of leaders from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), have established a Small Business Enterprise (SBE) construction spending goal of 3.8% for this project (more than $150M).

This participation goal was established based on a methodology outlined by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which considers the availability of SBE firms in the local market, the project’s scope and industry standard practices. The size and scope of this project is historic, and the project team is committed to bringing the entire community together, including SBE contractors and businesses, to complete this work.

Businesses who participate on the project are not required to be SBE certified. However, spending with certified SBE firms will count toward the 3.8% goal. Ohio and Kentucky worked together to create a process for Kentucky SBE certified firms to count towards the 3.8% SBE spending goal for this project without having to re-certify through ODOT.

ODOT’s Small Business Services department is responsible for certification of SBE firms that wish to do business with ODOT through the Ohio Unified Certification Program. More information is available about the certification process on their website.
